Ben Howard is a young singer/songwriter from the UK who’s making it big on the local folk scene. His blend on sunshine enthused, hearty folk tunes are steeped in laid back, surf vibes and intricate guitar playing.  Vocals soar, rising into a rebel rousing chorus in  newest single Keep Your Head Up. It was hailed as Radio 1′s Hottest Record In The World recently and is a solid indication of what to expect from his eagerly anticipated  debut album ‘Every Kingdom‘ due for release early October.

The clip below is a solid example of this bright young musician who looks set to lighten up the soundtrack to your summer. His UK tour has expanded with extra shows being added all over the country and into Eureop. Fingers crossed we see him grace our shores here in Australia soon.  Every Kingdom is out on Island Records 3rd October

Greenthief are a rift rollicking three piece band from Brisbane who have ripping it up for three years or so. Last week they released their new clip, tonight it received airplay on Triple J and later this week they’ll play a bunch of shows in Sydney. …Tomorrow, well who knows where tomorrow will take them but one thing’s for sure, it’s gonna be amazing.

Greenthief walked into the recording studio earlier this year to record their new EP. The walked out with a finished product that was produced by legendary British producer Steve James (Sex Pistols, The Jam) and mastered by Tim Young (Bjork, Placebo).

Their sound blends rocks harder side with waves of physcadelia and Muse like awesomeness. Progressive drum beats come from the safe hands of Steve Tyssen, backed by some killer bass rifts laid down by the fascinatingly grubby, and always fun to drink with, Tom Abbot. Together these guys are lead by the vocal and guitar talents of Julian Schweitzer to form the sharp, dark, and mysterious band that you see before you.

Florence And The Machine: Shake It Out

Hot on the heals of lead single What the Water Gave Me, Florence + The Machine have released single number two from the latest album Ceremonials.  The new album promises to be a belter, pure Florence magic, switching from the ethereal enchantment of the previous single to the high energy, sassy vibes, of new single, Shake It Out. The song was written more as an ode to shaking off the previous nights regrets than it was to the Sydney Carter hymn which holds the same lyric “It’s hard to dance with the devil on your back.”

Speaking to Mary Anne Hobbs on London’s XFM Music:Response show, Flo explained: “I wanted to just shake something out, shake out these regrets, shake out these things that haunt you. It was one of those songs that came in about half an hour and when you’ve got a hangover, it is almost like a hangover cure. You’re like, thank you!”

…I’m like thank you. The new track is awesome! I think it will calm the nerves for those who worried about the strength of the lead single.

Ceremonials is out on the 31st of October but for those of you wanting to be among the first you can pre-order it here! Enjoy

New music: Ghostpoet – Liiines

Swiftly taking the trophy as one of this year’s leading voices, Mercury Prize nominee, Ghostpoet has recently released the video for Liiines. It’s the third offering from his debut album, Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam which is released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label. Whilst Ghostpoet may have skipped out on claiming the music industry prize this time around, he is sure to command a dominating presence among the burgeoning soul explosion happening across Britain right now.

Story telling is coming to forefront of young British musicians, blending genre’s as it crosses between the recent anger expressed in the grime scene to the more soulful tales expressed in the likes of Ghostpoet and Michael Kiwanuka.

There’s no doubt recent events and global trends are impacting the UK music scene. It’s interesting to watch as the output it so deftly and quickly put into music. Especially when the music is so full of depth and rich in character as the video above for Ghostpoet’s Liiines.
