Jans Lekman has been bubbling around in the background of consciousness for some time after his music was recommended to me by a friend, much cooler and on the pulse, than myself. His perfectly crafted, super literal lyrics, appealed to my sense of twee and love of artists such as Belle & Sebastian and Laura Marling. Best example of one such track is the aptly titled ‘I’m leaving you beacuse I don’t love you’. It’s a no messing simplicity that provides one of the happiest post break up songs you could ever wish for.
This mesmerising – tell it like it is – attitude permeates his new single. Note the verse that starts, as so many wedding proposals in Bondi seem to: “So let’s get married, I’m serious, but only for the citizenship, I’ve always liked the idea of it”… Turns out Lekman moved to Australia to escape a break up in his homeland Sweden and faced with the looming deadline for a permanent visa popped the question to his best friend. (We’ve all been there!)
Jens Lekman new single ‘I Know What Love Isn’t‘ is the lead track from his first album in 4 years. It’s released this September on Secretly Canadian records. It is sure to be both hilarious and mesmerising
