Sydney band New Navy have cooked up a rip roaring cover of Télépopmusik’s Breath. The track is bursting with the same sunshine flavour that these local boys have persistently brewed up. Ben McInerney’s rich vocals adorn the glittering guitar work that replaces Télépopmusik original electronic approach. Ridiculously upbeat, catchy as all hell and totally danceable, their jingle jangle approach to music making has put these boys on an express train to awesome town and we’re all invited.
New Navy took some seriously big strides in 2011 with their summer hits ‘Zimbabwe‘ and ‘Tapioca‘ carving up triple j and community stations all year and nabbing a spot on the Hottest 100 list.
Breathe is available as a free download below, stay tuned to their website for upcoming announcements!

2 – The single Tightrope is available to you for free. Just head over to the bandcamp page and swap your email for a free mp3 download.
3 -They’re supporting Faker on July 12th. Playing The Star’s tequila laden live venue, Rock Lily. Creating a night that is sure to involve some late night bacchanalia and good times!
½ points go the animated gif the boys have created…. ’nuff said.
Kudos to Tone Deaf for surfacing another great Australian band…
The Griswolds present a giant bundle of fun with their new single Heart of a Lion. Livelier than a box of frogs, this fast paced, fresh faced Sydney five piece Sydney are creating a bit of a name for themselves around town; not least for trashing the studio in which they filmed their latest video clip. They have since been banned from returning after the shoot took 5 days to mop up. Oops!
The Griswolds have had a strong start to 2012, with support shows alongside some of Australia’s best new bands including Millions, San Cisco, Hey Geronimo, and Kids of 88. I saw them last week at Bondi’s Beach Rd hotel and they tore it up so make sure you are in attendance for their upcoming gigs. To get you in the mood their latest track, Heart of a Lion, is available free via their bandcamp page. Dates for the Sydney gigs under the clip.

Lovers of Aussie hip hop rejoice! Chance Waters is back with a brand new track, Maybe Tomorrow, showcasing the ever diversifying range of material from this flourishing, local, talent. Having ditched his ‘Phatchance’ moniker on the eve of releasing Infinity, a smouldering precursor to his sophomore album by the same name,Chance Waters has signified his intent to be taken seriously as a major player in the scene.
Last year he performed at capacity crowds throughout his 3 week residency at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory; recorded tracks with the musically edible Charlie Mayfair and remixed the f@ck out of Gotye’s Somebody that I used to know, proving his music lives up to his mantra.
Maybe Tomorrow is a joyously off beat, piano led, hip hop track which deftly highlights another side of this often macabre artist. The chirpy tune features vocal talents of Lilian Blue and some oh so cynical lyrics that belie the complexity of melody which drives this song forward. Continuing the dream team format which has created much of this artists repertoire of works the song was produced by Adelaide’s One Above: The man responsible for tracks such as Hill Top Hoods’ single I love it, which featured Sia and was a firm favourite on the Walk of Shame airwaves for some weeks.
You can download the single over at the Unearthed site but what’s perhaps most exciting of all is the fact that this Saturday, 12th May, those of you Sydney can catch the man in the flesh at the Kings Cross Hotel, performing at one of the mighty FBi Social gigs that have plugged the gaping hole in Sydney’s live music scene! The night will be an epic journey into the life of one of this country’s promising hip hop artists…. And that my friends is a fact.
People elsewhere can head to the Chance Waters site to catch a gig near you! Be quick though as there ain’t many dates left.
Last year 16 yr old Jasmine Van den Bogaerde, or Birdy as she is affectionately known, struck YouTube gold with her smouldering rendition of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love. 21 million hits later and the track has finally been given an official Australian release. Not really sure what took them so long?
Birdy has released an album of covers that is out on Warner Bros and available through her website and all the expected music retailers you can think of. Hear her haunting covers of Phoenix, The XX and The National to name but a few. What’s missing is the cover of Ed Sheeran’s The A Team recorded for the Radio 1 live lounge which is rather beautiful. Fragile vocals, stark, bare boned piano playing collide to make a unmistakable experience.
Purchase the album for a special Sunday treat or sign up to the Birdy mailing list for a free mp3.
