BhangLassi

BhangLassi Walk of Shame session

Sydney indie-rock outfit Bhanglassi stopped by the Walk of Shame this morning performing three tracks live in the opulent surrounds of the Bondi FM Studios.  In between tales of flooding schools, wearing meat undies and dreams of performing naked* the fellas informed us they’re starting to work on a new album which is due out soon-ish.  Braving some pretty shocking weather the guys did well to squeeze into the studio and bust out their own brand of BhangLassi magic.

For the un-initiated their sound is similar to the Twang, or The Specials with just a touch of Happy Mondays and whilst the boys are fully assimilated into their Aussie lives their British heritage shines through brightly in the music. Always upbeat their music is defined by ‘kick ass choruses’ and some raucous harmonies.

The boys, who showed some comedy genius in the interview, are normally joined live by trumpets, keyboards and beats on stage but they whittled it down to three guitars and percussion to be able to fit in the studio. Check out the songs below and head along to The Gaelic this Friday to catch them live in all their glory.

There’s two other tracks for your audible over on my Soundcloud page. BhangLassi performed live on Bondi FM 23.7.11

*I may have embellished the wish to perform naked. But only slightly.

Tin Sparrow

Tin Sparrow

Matt Amery of Sydney wonder-group Tin Sparrow joined me last week on The Walk of Shame, sharing new tracks form the upcoming EP, ahead of the tour which starts this week:  The Brass Monkey in Crunulla has the first show this Wednesday 29th June before reaching the Vangaurd on Friday 1st July and onto Brisbane thereafter.

All shows are supported by the lovely sounds of Charlie Mayfair, one of the upcoming acts to watch for 2011. Together with headliners Tin Sparrow the night looks set to be a formidable folk frenzy with the later blowing away crowds at the recent FBi Social gig a few weeks back! As first act on stage that night Tin Sparrow held their own against Husky and The Fall, that night, to the point where many wondered if they were about to upstage the other acts.

Chatting with Matt you could really grab the sense of anticipation, excitement and trepidation about what the future will hold for Tin Sparrow now that can finally promote a full EP. Their sound is unmistakeably indie folk, reinforced with great big textures and a range that can seem them flow from spaghetti western to acoustic folk and back again without sounding forced or disjointed.

Matt joined me for the last quarter of the show, below is a round up of what went down… Don’t panic the dodgy porno music that is too loud in the background soon ends. For the real thing get to The Vangaurd this Friday!

Charlie Mayfair the Brisbane darlings of folk are currently touring New South Wales to celebrate their brand new film clip “If I Fell Down”. They are taking time out of their busy schedules to pop into the Bondi FM Cafe,  for a spot of breakfast  this Saturday morning (23rd Oct).

Thought we’d add a little note about the magical set from the Florence + The Machine gig we went to this Friday (Thanks to the lovely Miss Nash for letting us come & hang out). It was a faultless performance which saw Flo’s little lungs deliver that huge voice in the Enmore Theatre. The ever enchanting Florence delivered electrifying renditions from the album and showcased some of her newer material which sounded amazing. Hairs prickled on arms as hands clapped and mouths curved upwards in admiration of the songstress.

The band are pretty amazing, dual drumming, keys and the enchanting sounds of that harp serve and the perfect accompaniment to the ethereal sounds of Florence’s voice. Catch her live as soon as you can and make sure you watch the MTV Video Music Awards which will include another breathtaking live performance in September.

UPDATE: We were lucky enough to go see Florence + the Machine again, on Sunday for their final Sydney show at the EQ and it was another slap down knock out.  The crowd were clearly more alive and provided an extra boost to the performance which was utterly fantastic. We’re nominating Flo for one of the most sexy, yet strangely sexless, people on stage due to her smoldering dance routines and electrifying onstage presence !   We’ll put the photo’s up on Facebook in time for the weekend.

In the meantime the Cosmic love remix is being widely offered up as a free download so turn up your stereo and dance those little socks off. Flo’s in town!

We’ll be putting the band back on high rotation over the next few weeks on the Walk of Shame. Be sure to tune in next week to catch the action, online or on 88fm, Bondi FM.
